A STORY ABOUT SHEEP,
WOLVES, SMUGGLERS,
AND TWO SUMMITS WITH
FANTASTIC VIEWS.
“There aren’t any paths, but just keep to the left of the stream,
continue past a large tree across gravel, over some stone slabs
and a little clambering up onto the Gamila.” //
We must have
big question marks hanging over our heads. But, as we found
out later, the shepherd’s gesticulations are actually pointing
us in the exact direction. We have our sights set on two sum-
mits today and are glad we’re carrying light active rucksacks.
Especially after a sleepless night: loudly bleating sheep were
being herded onto the upland pastures, which can attract
wolves. But instead of wolves we were faced with four Alba-
nian smugglers, who immediately took to their heels when we
approached them …
Still rather tired we first climb over steep serpentines and
loose pebbles on the Astraka and are rewarded with an
overwhelming view of the almost endless wilderness. Feel-
ing euphoric, we set off onto the Gamila 1. Hours later we
are enjoying an even more superb panoramic view of Dragon
Lake, the Astraka Massif, the Vikos Canyon and the Aoos
Gorge all the way to faraway Albania. But it’s on the way back
that we experience the real adventure. It starts to cloud over.
Sleet showers drastically reduce visibility. And which way
was it again? At some point, long after darkness has fallen we
finally reach the Astraka hut, exhausted but happy.

WE HAVE A LOT OF ALTITUDE
TO COVER TODAY.
SO WE’RE RELIEVED WE HAVE OUR
ACTIVE RUCKSACKS WITH US.
ON THE ALPINE TERRAIN OF THE
ASTRAKA AND GAMILA 1, A RUCKSACK
HAS TO SIT PERFECTLY YET STILL
ALLOW UNRESTRICTED MOVEMENT.
We often experience situations when we wish that our rucksacks would merge into one with our
bodies
// It should sit very close to the body’s centre of gravity and at the same time join
in with every extreme movement we make. These properties are extremely relevant to our
safety. This is why the Bavarian mountain rescue service and alpine guides of the Ober-
allgäu Mountain School trust the
Alpine Ridge
alpine rucksack. With its height-adjustable
Padded Back Vario carrying system
it adjusts precisely to the frame of its carrier and
offers an excellent load control with optimum freedom of movement.
Another decisive factor is the weight. After all, when you’re walking up a steep slope, every
gram counts. The 35-litre alpine rucksack
Cima di Basso
has a sensationally low weight for
example. Reduced down to the bare essentials, it weighs just 850 grams, which makes it an
extremely popular and reliable rope companion on the climbing scene.
A rucksack doesn’t only have to offer plenty of freedom to move and a light weight for moun-
taineering and climbing, but also for all kinds of very active sports, such as mountain biking.
The equipment required for these activities consists only of minimum weather protection,
a few energy bars, a hydration system and a first-aid kit.
TATONKA
offers many ideal compa-
nions for when very little baggage is needed. One of them is the dynamic active rucksack
Patience
with a volume of 10 litres and a net weight of just 550 grams.
But one thing applies to all
TATONKA
active rucksacks: they are versatile, whether for free
climbing or trail running, for biking or inline skating. But every individual one convinces
with its ideal point of gravity, good body contact, maximum freedom of movement, and light
weight.

Alpine Ridge 30
The alpine rucksack of choice for the mountain rescue service.
Developed
in cooperation with the Oberallgäu Mountain School (member of the mountain rescue service), who also tested it,
this rucksack has been used by many mountain guides ever since. The Alpine Ridge project has developed into an
incredibly effective single-chamber rucksack, which really shows what it’s capable of in an alpine setting. The main
features of the Alpine Ridge are its perfect t with optimum freedom of movement thanks to the adjustable Padded
Back Vario carrying system, excellent load control with the side compression and load control strap, countless attach-
ment possibilities for alpine use all year round and the very good division of space and accessibility. And of course
it’s all weatherproof thanks to the taped seams in the lid compartment with Thermo-Fusion zip fastener.

Cima di Basso 35
Plain alpine rucksack.
With its reduced but well-designed features, the Cima di Basso 35 will impress on any moun-
tain. This alpine lightweight weighs in at just 850 grams. The pre-shaped Padded Back carrying system and the detachable belt hip strap guarantee
that it sits well against the body – even when a lot of movement is involved. The top compression always keeps the rucksack in place, and can also be
used to attach climbing ropes. And apart from all of that, the single-chamber rucksack is visually pleasing to boot.
