The train services to and from Barnstaple rail station (operated
by First Great Western) normally carry bicycles. There is no
booking and no fee for cycle carriage to Exeter Central or Exeter
St Davids. It is wise to arrive early as cycles are taken on a first-
come first-served basis. Officially two cycles per train are carried
on these services. However, the train guards often take a more
flexible approach on less busy services.

If travelling by train further than Exeter, particularly if changing
train and operator, it is best to book your cycle(s) (tel:
08457 484950). Cycle parking stands are available at Barnstaple
station but please note there are no lockable cycle cabinets or
containers at the station.

The Trail forms the northern half of the superb National
Cycle Network route 27 known as the ‘Devon Coast
to Coast’ and you will notice these blue, red and white
NCN 27 signs on the path.
Along the route there are some excellent coastal
and market towns to explore. Ilfracombe, Braunton,
Barnstaple, Bideford and Great Torrington all offer
great variety and interest. There are also a multitude of
small villages and settlements on or close to the Trail
with quality pubs, cafes and places to stay.
