PHOTOS: REXstreet. His face hidden by abalaclava, Kiefer Sutherland ison a deadly mission as he closesin on his victim…It sounds like a scene straight outof24,but this time Sutherland isplaying it strictly for laughs in SkyArts’Marked,a quirky Christmascomedy drama about a reluctanthitman who couldn’t be moreunlike his rogue agent Jack Bauer. The one-off special follows themisfortunes of James, played bySutherland, a former US MarineCorps logistics worker now livingin a drab London suburb with awife and daughter. Unemployed, drowning in debt, and facing theprospect of having his houserepossessed, James is unexpectedlyhanded a financial lifeline whenhis golf-mad neighbour Brian(Kevin McNally) comes to himwith a crazy idea.‘Brian’s wife has been cheatingon him with a bloke called Steve, sohe asks James to bump him off for£1200,’ reveals McNally. ‘Jamesmakes a very unlikelyhitman, but his life iscollapsing aroundhim, so heeventuallyagrees.’However, when Jamesbreaks intoSteve’s houseto commit the murder, he’s shockedto discover Father Christmas(Stephen Fry) warming himself bythe fire. Will Santa be caught up inthe deadly plot, or will James learnthe importance of peace on Earthand goodwill to all men?‘The story is a lovely twistedChristmas tale,’ says McNally.‘Because Kiefer is so synonymouswith Jack Bauer, it is really funny tosee him play this bungling assassin.’The Bristol-born actor, seenrecently in the Channel 4 dramaThe Mill, had never worked withSutherland before, though they hadoften met socially through theirmutual friend, actor Greg Ellis, who wrote and directedMarked.‘To get the chanceto work with Kiefertwice in one yearwas pretty good’KEVIN MCNALLYThe comedy also reunitedMcNally with Stephen Fry. Thepair had remained friends aftermeeting on the set of 1992dramaCommon Pursuit.‘Stephen really is a nationaltreasure; he has proved himself overthe years to be incrediblyversatile. We had a veryfunny time on set –it was morelike a holidaythan a job.’For Fry, too,it proved tobe a greatexperience.‘Working with Kiefer waslike a Christmas present initself,’ says the 57-year-old.‘I don’t know of manystars as charming andhumble and with such agreat capacity for work’.Shortly after makingMarked,McNallyteamed up withSutherland and Fryagain for24: LiveAnother Day,whichsaw Fry play theBritish PM andMcNally guest as aRussian agent whowhisks Bauer awayin a helicopter in thevery final scene.‘Kiefer told methere was a tiny partthat he wanted me toplay,’ smiles McNally.‘I wasn’t too keen at firstbecause it only had acouple of lines. Then hesaid, “Yes, but you play theman who gets Jack Bauer”. Howcould I refuse that? To get thechance to work with Kiefer twicein one year was pretty good.’McNally is currently in theUS filming the second series of theperiod dramaTURN: Washington’sSpiesbefore he returns home tospend Christmas in England withhis wife Phyllis Logan, who playsunflappable housekeeper MrsHughes inDownton Abbey.‘Over in the USDowntonis incredibly popular’, saysthe 58-year-old. ‘I only haveto mention that I am married toMrs Hughes and the free drinkscome thick and fast.’Kiefer Sutherlandas unlikely hitmanJames and StephenFry as FatherChristmasNext year,McNally willreturn to the US to continuefilmingTURN,which willshortly air in the UK on Netflix.‘I wouldn’t be surprisedif I was in America for quitea few years makingTURN,andthe plan is for Phyllis to joinme out there,’ he reveals.‘She is obviously committedtoDownton, but when thatcomes to a conclusion, she’llcome to the US. She just didan episode ofBones, and itgave her the confidence thatshe will be able to find work.I told her she would be ableto play every glamorousgranny on US television.’4TV&Satellite WeekKiefer Sutherland andKevin McNally in 24:Live Another DayWHO PLAYEDSANTA?Plenty have played FatherChristmas on screen.
