IN THE CENTRE OF GREECE A
WONDER OF THE WORLD IS
WAITING TO BE DISCOVERED BY
AMBITIOUS HIKERS: METEORA.
Allow us to introduce: the eighth wonder of the world //
Up to 300 metres high sandstone pillars, reminiscent of mys-
terious mythical creatures, and 24 monasteries enthroned on
the rocks like eagles’ nests. Welcome to Meteora. The bizarre
rocky landscape was rediscovered in the seventies by a small
group of climbers. To this very day there are still only two
climbing guides by the German alpinists Hasse and Stutte
dating from 1977 and 1986 – but no topographical map! Per-
haps because the Greeks don’t hike, but prefer to make their
pilgrimages to the monasteries by bus? At least that would be
an explanation for the fact that some of the paths are almost
completely overgrown.
A starting point for several hikes is the lively little town of
Kalambaka. Even though finding your way around the stony
labyrinth isn’t very easy. But it does allow us to gain countless
lasting impressions (and, due to the fact that we’re constantly
up and down, we also notch up plenty of altitude metres).
We were particularly fascinated by the animals we encoun-
tered. A pair of Egyptian vultures circled above our heads for
an hour, tortoises crossed our paths and then this… monster!
Later on, the landlord of our favourite taverna explains to us:
the ‘monster’ is a European Legless Lizard, which measures
up to 1.20 metres in length and really has no legs! Apparently
it’s harmless compared to a sand viper. But he hasn’t seen any
of those for a while. How reassuring!

HIKING RUCKSACKS WITH AIR
CONDITIONING AS STANDARD.
Hiking has meanwhile reached the most diverse of target
groups //
Knee socks and a red checked shirt are the favourite
uniform for some. Others couldn’t imagine setting off without
their trendy hiking equipment, electrolyte drinks and energy
bars. But one thing applies to everyone: as long as you are
outside in the fresh air, that’s all that matters.
So at the end of the day it’s also a question of taste whether
you decide on a toploader or frontloader rucksack. Some
swear by the classics
Breva
and
Tivano
, which have been
part of the collection for many years and whose details are
constantly being improved. Others prefer the modern top-
loader models
Karema
and
Farou
or the new frontloader
models
Zefir
and
Cona
.
Whichever
TATONKA
hiking rucksack you go for – all models
have the following features:
Firstly:
a ventilated and, above all, height-adjustable
X Vent
Vario carr ying system
, which serves its carrier excellently
under the hot Greek sun, even when fully loaded.
Secondly:
comfortable, ergonomically shaped shoulder and
hip straps, which distribute the weight evenly on the shoul-
ders and hips.
Thirdly:
the many practical details that hugely increase the
carrier’s comfort. Such as for example the signal-coloured rain
cover, the first-aid compartment, key holder, hydration system,
hiking stick holder, chest strap with signal whistle and even
more.
Of course all of our hiking rucksacks are available as ladies’
and men’s models, which are adapted to the physical dif-
ferences between male and female bodies. And if the men
amongst you are now saying that there aren’t any differences
(and there certainly are!): we suggest you go to a specialist
retailer and try on a well-filled ladies’ rucksack to compare.
And vice-versa for the ladies.
LIKE EVERYWHERE ELSE, IN
METEORA THERE ARE SPORTY
HIKERS AND THOSE WHO LIKE
TO TAKE A SLOWER PACE.
The volume also plays a decisive role. For a one-day hike
approx. 20 litres will suffice. But if you want to carry addi-
tional belongings from a hiking friend or for an overnight
stay in a hut, you’ll find that 30 litres are enough. Thanks
to the modern
TATONKA
carrying systems, loads between
4 and 10 kilos can also be effortlessly transported over longer
distances. Now we’re almost reaching the lower limits of the
lightweight trekking rucksacks. But that’s a different chapter.

to your belongings, you’ll be inter-
ested in the new recruit to our ladies’

equally practical.

Cona 25
New hiking rucksack for ladies.
Cona has a carrying system that is adapted to the female form. This ensures optimum t with suf-
cient ventilation – and therefore the best possible carrying comfort. Side compression straps and a height-adjustable chest strap with signal whistle
guarantee additional support and security. The large main compartment can be loaded very practically from the front, and for more exibility when
packing, the bottom compartment can easily be separated using the zip. In the main compartment there is a compartment for a hydration system and
a mesh pocket. Plus the mesh pockets on both outer sides and a hiking stick holder offer additional storage space and exibility.
