As outdoor enthusiasts one gets the impression that they don’t do
much sport in Greece //
But that’s not true. (After all, outdoor
pursuits aren’t actually sport, are they?) It’s a well known
fact that Greece is the birthplace of sport. Both culturally and
politically the Ancient Greek Olympic Games were of incom-
parable significance and held every four years for a total of
1000 years.
This tradition was only resurrected in Athens in the year
1896. The Intercalated Olympic Games were held ten years
later in 1906 and Athens was chosen to host the 28th modern
day Olympics in 2004. We visited the old and new sporting
venues and were surprised how freely and easily we were
able to move around these hallowed places. And when you
find yourself standing right in the middle of it all you sense
the energy these sites emanate. We felt compelled to run,
jump and pit our strengths against one another.
