It’s starting to get tiring //
Since we descended into the canyon in
Monodendri this morning, our white-water companion has been
talking non-stop, telling us about his daring exploits on our hike
through the Vikos gorge. But there’s absolutely no water flowing
down here and on top of that we’re thirsty. According to him we
should arrive at the legendary Voidomatis springs that evening.
We don’t believe a word this storyteller says – but we’re soon
proven wrong: we can hear a burbling and indeed, suddenly
we see a whole river streaming out from various springs in the
cliff face! Our ‘hero’ then teasingly rushes to the edge of the
wild mountain stream and scoops his stainless steel mug into
the river. Cheers! We have to admit: it really is a magical place.
And the fresh spring water is simply divine. But it doesn’t fill
our rumbling stomachs. So we light up the stove and conjure
up a delicious evening meal with our dehydrated beef stroganoff
(thankfully there’s no shortage of water). Full and satisfied we
go for a refreshing dip in the stream and as usual we play a game
to see who is going to be lumbered with the washing up. Stone,
paper, scissors – it looks like it’s going to be our white-water
expert. But we’re still not going to let him tell any of his heroic
tales around the campfire tonight.

time we were even able to forgo the outdoor washing-up liquid.
Stainless steel is easy to clean without any residues and is far
superior to aluminium when it comes to hygiene. Aluminium
may be lighter, but it is by no means as robust as stainless steel.
If every gram of weight counts and you only want to heat up
water, you should go for titanium utensils instead. But the brit-
tle material does not allow for the production of more complex
shapes, so finally, stainless steel remains the best alternative.
